Why Badminton?
Badminton is an excellent sport for fitness, coordination, and social connection. It's easy to learn basics but offers lifetime depth for those who want to improve. Unlike some sports, people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy badminton.
Equipment You'll Need
Racket
Start with an entry-level racket ($30-50). Key considerations:
- Weight: Choose a lighter racket (85-90g) for better control
- Grip size: Should feel comfortable in your hand
- Balance: Even-balanced rackets are best for beginners
Shuttles
Feather shuttles for serious practice, nylon for casual play. Most clubs provide shuttles, so check before buying.
Shoes
This is crucial - never use running shoes on court! Badminton shoes have non-marking soles with good lateral support. Invest in quality shoes to prevent injuries ($50-80).
Clothing
Comfortable athletic wear that allows full range of motion. Many players prefer moisture-wicking materials.
Basic Rules
- Games are played to 21 points (best of 3 games)
- Rally scoring: every rally results in a point
- Server must hit shuttle below waist height
- Shuttle must land within boundary lines
- Players cannot touch the net or cross into opponent's court
Essential Techniques
Grip
Hold the racket like shaking hands - your thumb and index finger form a "V" on the handle. This basic grip works for most shots initially.
Ready Position
Stand with knees slightly bent, weight on balls of feet, racket held at chest level. This allows quick movement in any direction.
Basic Shots to Learn First
- Serve: Underhand motion to start the rally
- Clear: High, deep shot to the back of opponent's court
- Drop: Gentle shot that falls just over the net
- Drive: Flat, fast shot at net height
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Using arm only instead of whole body
- Standing flat-footed instead of on toes
- Gripping racket too tightly
- Not returning to center court after shots
- Watching the opponent instead of the shuttle
